Environmental restoration project will close Foster Avenue in Gibbsboro

(Lindenwold, NJ) – Foster Avenue in Gibbsboro will be closed for the next nine to 12 months as a major environmental remediation project is underway at the former Sherwin Williams factory, better known as the Paintworks, in Silver Lake. Construction will begin on August 30, and the road will be closed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Sherwin-Williams operated a paint manufacturing plant on the site from the mid-19th century until 1977. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said years of direct discharges of waste into Hilliards Creek and other factors led to widespread contamination of soil, sediment, surface water and groundwater.

“This remediation work has been ongoing for several years and this project will continue to correct more than a hundred years of environmental degradation,” said Al Dyer, liaison officer for the Department of Public Works. “While the extended closure will cause some disruption to traffic flow, it will be worth it. This project is not only extremely important for the health and welfare of our residents, but also for the environment and ecosystem of our region, and we will all benefit from this work.”

The project is owned and managed by Sherwin Williams and its contractor, Vita Nuova. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Elaine Richardson, Community Relations, Sherwin-Williams Gibbsboro Project at: 856-782-4935.
