FSU Health: New research scientist to strengthen collaboration between Tallahassee Orthopaedic Clinic and FSU researchers

Emilie Miley, a new hire to FSU Health and Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic, will help build bridges between the two institutions.

As part of the thriving FSU Health Initiative, the Florida State University Institute of Sports Science and Medicine (ISSM) and the Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic (TOC) have joined forces to hire a new research scientist to bridge the gap between clinicians and researchers.

Emilie Miley will serve as Assistant Director of Research, Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, ISSM Aug. 5. Her work, jointly funded by TOC and FSU Health, embodies a comprehensive effort to improve health in North Florida through innovative research.

Miley is a certified athletic trainer with the National Athletic Trainers Association and has over 10 years of experience in sports medicine and orthopedic research. She most recently served as the Clinical Research Coordinator in the Department of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine.

“I am excited to be part of this interdisciplinary team of orthopedic surgeons and clinical researchers to advance knowledge in patient care,” said Miley. “I am passionate about supporting healthcare providers to provide the best patient-centered care possible through the lens of research. This position will allow me to leverage my strengths as a clinician-researcher to drive research initiatives to optimize healthcare.”

The strategic collaboration between FSU Health, ISSM and TOC aims to bridge the gap between clinical practice and academic research, ultimately providing a stronger health care system for North Florida residents.

Miley will lead research projects aimed at improving healthcare outcomes in orthopedic medicine and sports science and work closely with world-class orthopedic surgeons and clinical researchers.

Prior to joining the University of Florida, Miley served as an Assistant Professor of Kinesiology and Athletic Training at Charleston Southern University while providing outreach athletic training services to local high schools throughout her career.

She received her doctorate in athletic training from the University of Idaho and her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in athletic training from Indiana State University. She also holds a doctorate in education from the University of Idaho, specializing in psychometric analysis of patient-reported outcomes.

Miley joins a team of researchers and affiliates at ISSM dedicated to advancing knowledge in sports nutrition, exercise science and athletics research, clinical research, sports psychology, and orthopedic sports medicine.

ISSM was established in 2010 with TOC as a founding partner as an interdisciplinary research center. Other partners include the FSU College of Education, Health and Human Sciences; the FSU Department of Athletics; the FSU College of Medicine and Nike.

“I am delighted to welcome Dr. Emilie Miley to FSU,” said Michael Ormsbee, ISSM director and professor in FSU’s College of Education, Health and Human Sciences. “She brings impressive expertise and a commitment to advancing medical outcomes in orthopedic care and sports medicine. She will play an important role in leading innovative research projects that align with the mission of ISSM and that of TOC and FSU Health.”

TOC has a long-standing partnership with FSU, including hosting more than 120 medical students in the past decade and providing team physicians for all FSU athletic programs for the past 50 years. The collaboration has resulted in many successful research initiatives.

“The addition of Emilie Miley enables TOC to rapidly accelerate orthopedic innovation and provide better care than ever before to our 270,000 patients,” said Michael Boblitz, TOC CEO. “I am delighted to have Dr. Miley as a member of our team.”
